An Abundance Of Guns...

Something To Think About This Weekend...

                                            An Abundance Of Guns...

Another shooting and whether or not it is workplace violence or it ends up being a terrorist attack it is another in what seems to be a never ending chain of: more guns, more bullets, more death.

First let me say that I do not want anyone to take away anyone's guns.
I do not oppose people having guns.
But here is where we might differ;
I don't think there is any conceivable reason for anyone other than those in the military to have or need automatic weapons and bulk ammunition clips.
I think that there is every reason to have mandatory background checks for anyone trying to purchase a gun of any kind, anywhere and if you have nothing to hide or are not committing or planning to commit a crime you should not have a problem with them either.
It seems the more this happens the more we all dig in our heels and say no even before anyone has asked a question. No matter, we must find an answer...
Maybe there should be a limit per house hold on the number of guns you can have at one time. If you're not planning to arm a militia or go on a shooting spree do you  really need more than one or two guns?
Perhaps we could put a tax on ammunition $ 1000.00 per bullet. That might cut down on the number of shootings...
Maybe a gun tax. We pay taxes on our cars why not guns? Of course we have to register and licence our cars and we have to have and renew a drivers license...hu-m-m-m.
If we were to cut the number of fire arms we have in this country in half we would still have more guns than anyone else.
I keep hearing with each new shooting with loved ones lost and others traumatized for the rest of their lives, that the answer to this whole problem is just to have more guns.
With each addition to the body count I would ask you when will there be enough guns?
Will there be anyone left alive to answer that question?
Too much of anything is a bad idea...too much to drink, too much sun, too much to eat, too much exercise... ( or if you are so inclined; too many laws, too many immigrants, too much government... )
Why is it so hard to just admit we have an abundance of guns, and the consequences are more deadly than any terrorist attack we could ever imagine.
Truly reasonable people can have a disagreement about guns, abortion, the role of government and all the other topics that divide us, but while we are arguing about who is right and who is wrong and while we repeat all the talking points we have heard and agree with, people are dying and if we are not careful it will destroy us all.
With all these guns we have accumulated and all the common sense regulations that we have not put into place (congress just struck down a bill that would have made it illegal for those on The Terrorist Watch List to purchase a gun, really?) http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/senate-gop-votes-terrorist-gun-bill-article-1.2454448 we seem stuck in an endless loop of violence.

We seem to be more concerned about our position on the issue and how to make the case that our way is the right way rather than on the thousands of our citizens; men, women and children who are dying every day due to guns.

I feel I must repeat an important aspect to what I am saying here; I don't hate guns! I don't think there should be no guns. You like guns? Great have one or two but please let's live in a country where you have them and their abundance does not take away my rights.. my right to go to a movie theater or shopping mall or send my kids off to school without worrying about someone with guns and buckets of ammo shooting up the place.

I refuse to believe that we simply can not have a civilized discussion about this issue. Compromise is not a dirty word. Our country was founded on compromise.
If we stand around and do nothing but argue then that is our shame and for this we will be held accountable...

Have a wonderful weekend,

Noodle and crew

  1. I could see a tax on bullet. Great ideal, but like cigarettes I don't see the sales slowing down.

  3. I live in Texas and resigned to the fact that any sensible legislation in this country is virtually impossible at this time. Even all those children being gunned down in CT made no dent. Sad but true. In Texas gun laws have been loosened.

  6. Very compelling post - I happen to hate guns and wish no could have one. Ever. I just don't see the point. I'm not sure how or why violence has to be a part of our lives, but it has since the beginning of time and unfortunately it's becoming more commonplace and accepting now.

It is so much deeper than the surface - the whole core of our society and mindset has changed - violence is an accepted part of TV, music, video games, etc. and is in our faces on a 24/7 basis. Distinguishing the line between good and evil, right and wrong, is becoming more and more difficult and it will require a massive intervention by most of society to make a difference. The trouble is, most of us are just doing our best to get through the day - that in and of itself is stressful enough.

Anyhow, since guns are not going away (the technology is only getting more sophisticated), I really like your idea of a tax.

  7. Aaaaaw Noodle, we just hate all da violence against others too. We agwee it's insane to allow peeps from da terrorist watchlist to be able to purrchase guns, but we also know dat ifin they wanted a gun, they wuld be able to get it, legally or not. We fink dat's da biggest part of this purroblem. Much like pwohibition, peeps are gunna find a way to get da fings they want, legal or not. We also have no issues wiff da background checks and such, and our state has a 7 day waiting period after da initial desire to purrchase and paperwork. We know a lot of hunters and there are different guns fur different prey so a 2 limit might be a bit prohibitive. You wanna know what we fink is da biggest purroblem? Discipline. When mommy was a child spankings were da norm. Pawents taught their children good, bad, and respect. As weez told you, mommy grew up in a house full of guns, but she was taught to respect them and dat they weren't toys. Dat in da hands of a human they kuld take away life. But since peeps don't discipline their children these days and don't nopawdy respects da rights and lives of others, we fear more of these senseless acts will come to bear. So as we always do when we're helpless to do anyfin' more, weez send purrayers. Hope you have a blest day.

    Luv ya'

  8. A very thoughtful post Noodle! In the UK guns are not the norm, in fact all hand guns for private use are banned! My human hates guns and wishes people didn't feel they have to have them at all!

  9. We agree with you, Noodle. Why does the average human need an automatic rifle?? Something needs to be done.

  10. Very well written, you always put what I am thinking into just the right words.

  11. yes I agree. Why do people need automatic rifles and guns?
And of course there should be sanity checks too.

  13. Think of it like this. If more people were not just armed, but properly trained, less people would be getting gunned downed when these psychos choose to open up fire. Running and screaming wouldn't be the only option. As they say, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Secondly, if you choose to not pay "taxes" (which is apparently another word for extortion) your government sends men with guns to your house. When the day comes and the people say they've had enough, trust me, your government will send men with guns to your house. You want to have the option to protect yourself.
