In times like these...

"Good night and good luck". Edward R. Murrow

"And that's the way it is".  Walter Cronkite

We grew up with journalists who actually reported the news.

Not talking points and talking heads, but real verified factual news.

We were reminded of this while re-watching the movie Good Night and Good Luck

We miss journalism and we miss great journalists.

Mind you, this is not about fake news or an incitement of the media, there are good even great journalists out there today reporting real facts.

But watching the closing scenes from this movie, three things came to mind...

First how eerily similar the McCarthy Hearings sound to what is going on today. We need to heed the warnings of those who fought against and survived the events like the McCarthy era.

In the coming months we will  be tested as we navigate the hearings and fall out of todays  Impeachment hearings..

Second, if you just substitute the word Internet for television or box with lights, you could be talking about today.

And lastly, it reminds us of journalism that once was and what it could be again if only we have the courage to demand it.

Have a wonderful weekend...

  1. There is still some real journalists out there. They are now just not the norm and are drowned out by the garbage.

  4. Part of the problem is that real journalism used to be on "all 3 channels" and now there are "57 channels and nothing's on".

We watch MSNBC. We think they speak truth. Others watch other channels that say opposite things and think that THEY speak truth.

The problem is that too many of us have lost the ability to rationally determine what are facts and what are just opinions.

MY sources always speak "the truth" of course (koff, koff)...

  5. The problem is even those reporting the facts are accused of reporting false news. Seems like if you don't like the facts, just call it false. It's a shame.

  7. Agree 100%. The movie is a great one and hits home. Good reporters, journalists of quality are smaller in number but they can still shout about injustice. We can just hope people listen. The people and planet, can't take much more.

  8. Most of what we have are talking heads now. A bunch of Ted Baxters. Dan Rather was pretty pawsome too. I'm glad he's still online.

  9. I suspect that whilst theres big money involved and at risk, nobody will ever hear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

  10. Yes. I will not watch any of it. I won't read the papers either. I get my news that I need on line and use my brain to think for myself.
