Hurray for the kids!

After the latest mass shooting in a school, we fully expected the talking points to all be the same as usual.

Hearts and prayers.

Such a tragedy.

Now is not the time to talk, it's a time to grieve.

But to our surprise something amazing began happening.

KIDS!

The students from Stoneman Douglas High School where the latest shooting took place  and other students around the state and around the country are taking matters into their own hands.

Unable to depend on the ability of "the grownups in the room"to change anything.

Kids have decided they will lead the charge for change.

The adults have all fallen back on the same old platitudes.

On Wednesday Donald Trump convened a "listening session" which included parents, teachers, victims of school shootings and their families.

At this meeting one of the solutions Mr. Trump came up with that over the next several days he has doubled down on is arming teachers.

There aren't enough guns already so lets arm the teachers because... what could possibly go wrong?

Well, let's see....

Putting aside the fact that 99% of teachers asked said NO they would not feel comfortable having to carry guns.
They are there to teach not police.

Then there's this:

What if the teacher misses the target and shoots an innocent student?

What if the teacher snaps and starts shooting up the classroom?

What if a student who wouldn't otherwise have had a gun, steals the teachers gun and starts shooting?

How would the teacher know what other teachers were armed and not have someone shot in the crossfire?

How much would all this cost?

Where would the teachers store the guns?

Would they be libel in case of an accident?

What if the teacher was sick and there was a substitute?
Do we give them a gun?

Earlier this week, Lawrence O Donald of MSNBC's The Last Word did an excellent job of  breaking down why this is such a stunningly bad idea.

So, let's take a little test;

A. Arming teachers is a great idea.

B. Arming teachers and students is a great idea.

C. These are both the worst idea's in the world!

You decide......

In my humble opinion the very last thing we need in schools is more guns.

What we do need is common sense gun reforms.

If I hear one more person say ________ (fill in the blank) is coming to take their guns I will scream!

In all these years when has anyone taken your guns?

IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN SO RELAX!

And NO ONE needs an automatic weapon except the military and the police...period!

Can we just all be realistic?

No automatic weapons.
No arming teachers.
No, no one is taking your guns away.

End of discussion.

Now can we please get to work and make this a safer country for everyone?

Have a wonderful weekend...

  3. kids are amazing aren't they - if only something could really change--imagine going to school in a country where teachers are armed--that is something you would only expect in a war-torn country with child rebels--it just all seems so crazy

  4. Yippee for the kids who aren't swayed or corrupted or complacent yet and can clearly see right from wrong. Too bad they can't vote... yet. Seeing the close up photo of the card in that man's hands (you know what man I'm talking about) that had all his answers pre-written for him in response to "listening" to any of the students speak, shows how much he's bent on his own agenda and no one else's.

  5. I worked in public schools for 15+ years and would not want the responsibility of carrying a gun. You are also right about teachers. They have way too much to do now and aren't paid nearly what they are worth. I think all schools should have metal detectors and one entrance. We always used them for basketball and football games!

  7. I don't think the answer to gun problems is arming more people with them. Such a sad situation. XO

  8. We agree, there are too many guns already and the teachers shouldn't be made to carry them.

You are right on all counts and let's hope we will have another 60s group of kid who protest up the wazoo all of the craziness of the adults they have to put up with. Jeez, arming TEACHERS. What have we come to? LOULOU

  11. And if the "shooter" is a former student? Does anyone really think a teacher would be able to bring him or herself to kill someone he or she once knew? Someone he or she once taught? Once nurtured? Once cared about? Bring him or herself to kill that person? I don't know any teacher who could do that. MOUSES!

  14. These kids are so brave to stand up for a cause! Arming teachers is a bad idea. More guns is NOT the answer, that's for sure.

  15. It's amazing to me how much more pressure and responsibility some want to place on teachers who already overloaded.

  16. Our humom remembers when Crosby, Stills and Nash, wrote the song with this refrain, " . . . four dead in Ohio." Since then so many mass shootings have occurred that we all seem to have become numb to it all and certainly no one is writing songs about it. More guns is definitely not the answer, but an answer needs to be found. And soon!
