The term combined the name, of Massachusetts governor Eldridge Gerry with a salamander
reflecting the shape of a partisan voting
district he approved.

ReplyDeleteI remember the story, and seeing the political cartoon in my history book in school. It's just not right, no matter what you call it, but it's done all the time anyway.
